Summary
  • The National Committee for Rural Schools (NCRS) held an annual luncheon in New York City, 1956. Jack Stetson talks about his visit to Clarendon County, South Carolina. As the director of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union and a member of the national board of the National Committee for Rural Schools, Stetson explains how school desegregation has had and will have far-reaching implications in the community, economic life, businesses and relationships all over the country. Bill Flemming, leader of the Clarendon County Improvement Association speaks next on how the NCRS has reached out to the people of Clarendon County. He tells of the injustices done to Negro farmers and how the people are uniting and fighting back. Flemming also commends Judge Waring on his work in Clarendon County and refers to Clarendon County as the cradle of democracy in the South. Joe Glass, also a member of the board of the NCRS, talks about who and what makes it successful. He gives credit to Ray Brandstein, Shelley Appleton and others, and mentions unions which have made generous donations to those in the South.
  • Dr. Kenneth Clark describes what qualities truly great American leaders must possess, and then introduces Martin Luther King. In King's eloquent speech, he speaks out against segregation and its social and psychological harmfulness. He talks about the resistance anti-segregation has met and makes suggestions on how the integration process can be quickened by legal enforcement. He urges continued support for the NAACP and emphasizes the struggles and sacrifices that must be made to achieve freedom. The Reverend Don Harrington ends the program with a benediction.
