Biography
  1. Lavinia Williams was a dancer and a dance teacher, and was considered a leader in teaching Haitian dance. She danced leading roles with the Katherine Dunham Company, and also danced with Von Grona's American Negro Ballet Company and Anges de Mille. Williams performed in a number of shows and toured Europe with Noble Sissle's revival of "Shuffle Along." Williams went to Haiti in 1953 to work with members of the National Folkloric Troupe and during her first year there she founded the Haitian Institute of Folklore and Classic Dance. Williams taught dance in Antigua, the Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad. She also taught at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center School in Manhattan.
