- Note
- Attributed to Thomas Middleton by Halkett & Laing, and to King James I by the British Library; entered under James by STC with note "Anonymous. By Thomas Middleton." Middleton's editor A.H. Bullen, who found the work licenced "to Wm. Alley, at nomination of Thomas Middleton" in the Calendar of domestic state papers (July 19, 1618), believed it an attempt by Middleton to hoax readers into assuming James' authorship. Cf. The Works of Thomas Middleton / edited by A.H. Bullen. 1885-1886. v. I, p. xliv-xlv.
- For discussion of the respective roles in the authorship of Middleton, James and Francis Bacon (from whose "Charge ... touching duells" (1614) some of the fourth section is adapted), cf. "James I, Bacon, Middleton and the making of The peace-maker," by Rhodes Dunlap, in Studies in the English Renaissance drama in memory of Karl Julius Holzknecht. 1959. p. 82-94.

- "This punctualitie of reputation, is no better then a bewitching sorcerie, that inchaunts the spirits of young men, like the smoake of fashion, that witch tobacco, which hath quite blowne away the smoake of hospitalitie ...": p. [27-28].
