Biography
William Livingston (1723-1790), a lawyer, was the first governor of New Jersey. After practicing law in New York, he was a member of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776 and also a brigadier general in the New Jersey militia. He served as governor of New Jersey from 1776 to 1790 and in 1787 was a delegate to the Federal Constitutional Convention.
