Summary
The Robert Underwood Johnson papers document Johnson’s personal and professional life from 1875 until his death in 1937. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1880s through 1921, from Johnson's tenure as associate editor of The Century Magazine through his appointment as American Ambassador to Italy. American Copyright League material, 1880-1929, mainly correspondence, documents its activities and efforts to obtain passage of the International Copyright Act. The Century Magazine letterbooks contain outgoing letters from Johnson and editors Richard Watson Gilder and Clarence Clough Buel concerning the Magazine's Battles and Leaders of the Civil War series and other historical articles, general editorial and administrative matters, and other topics. Personal papers reflect Johnson's public, private, and professional life, including correspondence; memoirs and other writings; photographs of Johnson and others, including images dating from his ambassadorship in Italy; and scrapbooks of clippings concerning his published poetry and news items. Notable correspondents include Timothy Cole, Maurice Francis Egan, Richard Watson Gilder, Josiah Gilbert Holland, Thomas Commerford Martin, Harrison S. Morris, John Muir, and George Haven Putnam, among others.
