Biography (note)

• Henry Burgess (1781-1863) was a British inventor, economist, commercial investor, and editor. One of his sons, Charles Henry Burgess (1806-1854), was the first British subject to export goods directly from England to Persia. Another son, Edward (1810-1855), lived in Persia and became a tax collector there. Their brother, George Burgess (1817-1900), emigrated to America in 1840 and became an importer, largely of linen and threads.

Summary

Collection consists of papers from three generations of the Burgess family and relate to their personal and commercial activities. Bulk of the collection is family correspondence with details on various British, Anglo-Persian and Anglo-American topics. Henry Burgess's papers, 1794-1863, concern the monetary, fiscal and commercial policies of the British government. Pepers of Frances Ridsdale Burgess, wife of Henry Burgess, depict the life of a Victorian woman living in London and then Brighton from 1827 to 1847. Papers of Charles and Edward Burgess provide firsthand information on Persia from 1828 to 1855 including Anglo-Persian commercial and political relations as well as political conditions within Persia. George Burgess's papers, ca. 1830-1888, contain correspondence, account books, and diary of 1840-1843, and reflect his activities as a textile importer and businessman transplanted from England to the U.S. A fourth Burgess brother, Joseph, is represented by correspondence, 1827-1831, and schoolboy writings. Also included in the collection are correspondence, 1859-1929, and other writings of the wife and children of George Burgess; original watercolors and sketches done by family members; and genealogical materials (in photostat).
