Note
  • "Preface to the first American edition" on pages [vii]-xv signed and dated: Wm. Lloyd Garrison, Boston, May 1, 1845.
  • "Letter from Wendell Phillips, Esq.": pages [xiii]-xvi.
  • This Narrative, the autobiography of Frederick Douglass, was expanded in 1855 under the title My bondage and my freedom. In 1881, it was further extended as the Life and times of Frederick Douglass, and in 1893 completed and revised under the same title.
  • "The following comments on my Narrative appeared very lately in the 'Delaware Republican,' a newspaper published in the most northern of the Slave States, and not very remote from the part of Maryland where my early days were spent. Although put forth as a refutation of my statements, under the unflattering title of 'Falsehood refuted,' I have great pleasure in presenting it to my readers. The writer's admissions are valuable as a confirmation of the main facts of my Narrative, while the denials are only such as might be expected from an apologist of slavery. My reply to Mr. Thompson will be found at the end of his letter."--Appendix, [1], cxxiv-cxxxv p. at end.
