Summary
  1. This book condemns slavery, by appealed to whites' rational self-interest, rather than any altruism towards blacks. Helper claimed that slavery hurt the Southern economy by preventing economic development and industrialization, and that it was the main reason why the South had progressed so much less than the North since the late 18th century.

Local note
  1. The Schomburg Center's Manuscripts, Archives & Rare Book Division's copy is a gift, probably added to the collection when Catherine A. Latimer was the collection librarian; It includes the NYPL's bookplate of the "Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection," perforated stamp, and early processing markings of the original Schomburg Collection. Imperfect: water-stained, treated, reinforced title page, and library rebound in red cloth over boards and a gilt spine.
