G09896, G09895, G09897-G09900) are gifts from the Circulation Department of the 135 Street Branch. They include stamps of: " The New York Public Library: Astor, Lenox, and Tilden Foundations R 1922 L" with a specific number for each volume: 48732A, 48723A - 48727A; and also "Division of Negro Literature and History," "Property of the City of New York," and "The New York Public Library: Circulation Department, 135 Street Branch, 103 West 135th St. stamps on several parts of the book; Vol. 1: inscribed in ink on the recto of the first endleaf: "Samuel Shaw [?] with the true wishes of his [Spectacle? father...];" vol 4: also available on Microfilm. These volumes are Imperfect: they lack original cover; treated; bound in red cloth over boards library binding, and gilt spine. Originally parts of the Circulation Department of the 135 Street Branch; Added to the collection (July 3, 1942 -- G. K. Hall) when Catherine A.
