Summary
  • Records of CARE document the organization's early years as a temporary relief agency in post-World War II Europe, and the evolution of its scope into international relief and development work.
  • Additions, 1945-1997, including Board of Directors meeting minutes, document these operations more fully, especially the work of its overseas missions and regional offices, and collaborations with governmental agencies and not-for-profit aid groups. Also, the creation of new development programs such as CARESBAC; humanitarian aid for countries in crisis; the redefinition of CARE's corporate structure and policies during the 1980s; CARE's efforts to raise public awareness in the United States of global communities, conditions, and needs; and related fundraising and publicity efforts. The bulk of materials in the collection were generated by CARE's central offices in New York, prior to the relocation of headquarters to Atlanta, GA in 1993.
