Note
  • "Les textes sont donnés dans leurs transcriptions allemande, anglaise, française, et yorouba; le russe est transcrit en caractères latins"--Sheet 3.
  • "Included texts written between 1910 and 1948, mainly futurist Russian and 'Zaoum' texts as well as Dadaist writings ... In common they show a desire ... to break with the semantics of any given language, and to seek one of sounds with multiple associations"--Goeppert.
  • Title page information from first sheet.
  • Consists of 27 sheets folded in fours, numbered consecutively (except first, 16th and last) and chiefly with author's name, artist's name and medium of print on first outside page; cf. Contents, below. Text and/or print(s) on 4 inside pages of each sheet, to be contemplated unfolded; some copies were issued in unfolded format. Last sheet, "Avis muet au relieur," is blank except for title and is stitched to a blank folded sheet. The latter and an additional blank sheet at beginning are not counted in collation.
  • Illustrations: 27 prints : wood engraving (7), linocut (1), etching, aquatint, drypoint and/or engraving (13), lithograph (6) ; image 30 x 23 cm. or smaller. Wood engravings and linocut printed at Imprimerie Union. The etching by Chagall was printed at the press of Paul Haasen; remainder of intaglio prints at Atelier Roger Lacourière, Paris. Lithographs printed at Mourlot frères, Paris. Prints are chiefly b&w; several printed in monochrome, in black and monochrome, or in 2 colors. Image size chiefly ca. 1/4 of the unfolded sheet; larger prints usually include text or have text in letterpress superimposed. All blocks, plates and stones were effaced after printing; there were 4 "suites justificatives" from the effaced plates.
  • Issued unbound, divided in five volumes. Sheets of each volume inserted in white wove paper covers with the names of the poets and artists on front cover; the 5 vols. together then inserted in 2 white wove Arches wrappers, of which the first serves as lining for vellum covers with ill. by Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes and the admonition "Ne coupez pas mes pages" on front; the whole wrapped in a sheet of vellum with blind-stamped title over spine and 5 pleats over foreedge.
