• Illustrations: (v. 1, by Max Ernst:) 8 prints : etching, black on monochrome aquatint background ; full-page (plate mark 87 x 63 mm.). -- (v. 2, by Yves Tanguy:) 7 prints : etching, b&w, and aquatint, monochrome ; full-page (plate mark 95 x 67 mm.). Engraved in New York, 1947. -- (v. 3, by Joan Miró:) 8 prints : etching, b&w, and pochoir, col. ; full-page (etched portion with irregular plate marks, 124 x 95 mm. or smaller). Etched portions of each printed from an irregularly shaped cutout taken from a full-page (14 x 11 cm.) copperplate.
• Plates in all 3 vols. printed by R. Lacourière, Paris, and effaced after printing. There were also 31 suites of hand-colored versions of the prints for each volume, issued with special copies of the book; the suites for v. 3 consisted of prints created from the remainder of the plates from which the cutouts had been taken. According to Wittrock, there were only 8 suites for vol. 2; remaining 23 special copies issued with a cancelled plate.
• Each vol. issued in white paper covers with vellum book jacket, stamped in silver: l'ant it ête; the 3 vols. issued in black paper covered slipcase.
