- The Liberal Party of New York State was organized in New York City in 1944 by two prominent trade union leaders and former officials of the American Labor Party, David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and Alex Rose, president of the United Hatters, Cap and Millinery Workers Union. The most successful third party in America in the 20th century, the Liberal Party has sought to offer the liberal, progressive and independent voter in New York an alternative to the two major political parties and to provide through the practice of coalition politics support to liberal politicians in the other parties.

- Summary
Collection consists of correspondence, minutes, records of publications, press releases, financial records, printed matter, and other materials relating to the activities of the Liberal Party. About one-half of the records consist of correspondence, 1942-1975, mainly of the executive director, Ben Davidson, with organizers, county and regional directors of the Party, trade union officials in New York City, politicians, legislators, and others concerning Party affairs; its legislative programs, platforms and conventions; municipal, state and national politics; political campaigns; elections; and other matters. There is some correspondence, 1944-1945, of Alex Rose as executive secretary of the American Labor Party. Included also are records, 1952-1964, of the publicity director; records, 1945-1964, of the Trade Union Council of the Party; minutes, 1936-1965, of the New York County Liberal Party and of the state committee of the American Labor Party; press releases, 1948-1974; financial records, ca. 1948-1970; photographs; sound recordings, 1944-1965 of campaign advertisements, interviews with candidates in New York City elections, and meetings of the Liberal Party; printed ephemera; and scrapbooks, 1936-1963, of clippings and memorabilia.
