Summary
  1. Based on part of Homer's Odyssey, Monteverdi's opera focuses on the events subsequent to Ulysses' return to his homeland Ithaca. Disguised as an old man by the goddess Minerva and recognized by no one, Ulysses confronts the band of suitors who have gathered in his palace pursuing his long-suffering but faithful wife Penelope. Penelope arranges a contest among the suitors : whoever can draw Ulysses' bow will win her hand. All fail but Ulysses himself, who still unrecognized, not only draws the bow, but slays the suitors one by one. Penelope cannot believe that the old man is really her husband in disguise until his old nurse points out an identifying scar on his shoulder. The opera closes with the joyful reunion of hero and wife.
