  • Bigelow family consists of the relatives of John Bigelow (1817-1911), author, editor and diplomat. They include his wife, Jane Poultney; daughters, Annie (Mrs. Butler Kenner Harding) and Grace; sons, John and Poultney; granddaughter, Charlotte Kenner Harding (Mrs. Bryan Conrad); and other children and grandchildren. The family had residences at Highland Falls, New York, and Gramercy Park in New York City and was one of New York's socially prominent families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Summary
Papers consist of personal and family correspondence, diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter documenting the activities, mainly on the distaff side, of the family of John Bigelow. Papers of Grace Bigelow include letters, 1867-1932, to her from family and friends; diaries, 1865-1932; school notebooks; and financial papers. They concern relationships with family members, social life, education at Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island, travels in Europe, and management of her father's affairs. Papers of Jane Poultney Bigelow include correspondence with prominent persons of the time, such as William Cullen Bryant, Roscoe Conkling and Wilkie Collins, and with her mother. Her diary, 1873-1874, and scrapbooks reflect her European travels and social life. Papers of Annie Bigelow Harding include correspondence with her family and friends, diary, 1908-1920, and recollections of her father. Charlotte Kenner Harding papers contain letters from family and friends; journals, 1890-1912, with photographs and memorabilia; scrapbooks containing postal cards, clippings and photographs; and school notebooks kept at Miss Chapin's School in New York City. Collection also includes correspondence of John Bigelow, transcripts of his diaries, 1843-1911, household and personal bills, legal and financial papers, and copies of his published writings and speeches. Also, miscellaneous papers of various Bigelow family members, annotated guidebooks, artifacts, and family memorabilia.
