Summary
  1. Carmencita Romero discusses her long career in dance. Born Lily Butler in Chicago, Ill. Romero began dancing as a child and at 18 joined the Katherine Dunham Company where she learned the techniques that shaped her career as a dancer and choreographer. She talks at length about her work in the Broadway production of Cabin in the Sky. Romero also discusses the racism that often limited her work as an artist. Other career highlights include her dance research in Cuba, working in Japan as a choreographer and teacher, living and working in Italy and establishing dance schools in Chicago, Tokyo and Rome. At the time of the interview Romero was teaching at Spelman College and working to promote dance education for children.
