Summary
The collection consists mainly of individual and group portraits of actress and singer Dorothy Dandridge, and motion picture and publicity stills from some of her films. The collection includes studio and candid portraits of Dandridge, some of which were used for publicity purposes (ca. 1950s); candid shots of Dandridge and her second husband, Jack Denison (ca. 1959); Dandridge and her sister, Vivian, at the Academy Awards presentation in New York City (1955); appearing as a prosecution witness in the Confidential magazine criminal libel trial (1957); and taking ballet lessons with dancer Olga Lunick (ca. 1951).
Motion picture and publicity stills of Dandridge's feature films include "Bright Road" (1953) with Harry Belafonte and Philip Hepburn; "Carmen Jones" (1954) with Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, Joe Adams, Olga James, Diahann Carroll and director Otto Preminger; "Island In The Sun" (1957) with John Justin; "The Decks Ran Red" (1958) with James Mason, Broderick Crawford, Stuart Whitman, Joel Fluellen and director Andrew Stone; "Tamango" (1959) with Curt Jurgens; "Porgy and Bess" (1959) with Sidney Poitier, Sammy Davis, Jr., Pearl Bailey and Brock Peters; and "Malaga" (1962) with Trevor Howard and Edmund Purdom.
The collection also includes motion picture stills from "The Big Broadcast of 1936" (1935) and "A Day At The Races" (1937), which both feature Dorothy and Vivian Dandridge and Etta Jones as the Dandridge Sisters; stills from the musical short film "Cow Cow Boogie" (ca. 1941); television stills from her appearance on "The Colgate Comedy Hour" (1951) and from the series "Cain's Hundred," on an episode titled "Blues For A Junkman," with Ivan Dixon and Mitti Lawrence (1962); and a view of her singing at the Café de Paris, in London, accompanied on piano by composer/arranger Phil Moore (1951).
