Summary
  1. Views of Black Nationalist and Pan-Africanist leader Marcus Garvey dated approximately between the early 1900's to 1956. Collection includes half-length portraits of Garvey in interior and exterior settings. Group portraits show Garvey as a young child with his brother Julius; at John Bruce's funeral in 1924, during the 1921 and 1924 Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) Conventions in Harlem; being taken to the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary; and aboard the SS Saramacca before deportion to Jamaica. Collection also includes views of the UNIA parade in Harlem in 1920; the storefront of the Universal Millinery Store, a portrait of Amy Jacques Garvey viewing a Garvey memorial bust in Jamaica, 1954; photos of a painting of Garvey; and a photo of a flyer advertising a seminar on Harlem: The Garvey Era at the University of Massachusetts.
