Local Note
The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has four copies of the book; three copies in the Manuscripts, Archives, and Rare Books Division; and one in the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division. Copy 1 in Sc Rare 810.8-L (accession no. B434798) is inscribed in ink by Alain Locke: "For the Division of Negro Literature and History of the 135th Street Branch Library, Alain Locke, 1926." It includes various NYPL stamps such as: "Division of Negro Literature and History,
Copy 2 in Sc Rare 810.8-L (accession no. B594243) is part of the original collection purchased from Arthur A. Schomburg in 1926. It includes NYPL's bookplate of Arthur A. Schomburg Negro Collection pasted on page [2] of cover and inscribed in ink on the half-title page: "To my dear friend, Arthur A. Schomburg, valued collaborator in this and other projects, Alain Leroy Locke. December 3, 19[25]
Copy 3 in Sc 810.8-L (accession no. G277555) at the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division is a gift. Probably one of the items added to the collection when Catherine A. Latimer and Lawrence Reddick were the collection librarian & Curator. It inscribed in ink on half-title page: "To Roland R. Johnson, with fraternal regard, Alain Leroy Locke. March 4, 1926." Imperfect: lacks original cover, bound in red or burgandy cloth over boards library binding, and gilt spine. It includes one of the later versions of the NYPL's bookplate for {28}The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Copy 4 in Sc Rare D 78-2 is probably a post-Lawrence Reddick's addition to the Schomburg collection. It contains autographs from the contributors such as Countee Cullen, James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, Jessie Fauset, W.E.B. DuBois, Walter White, R.B. Nugent, etc. It also includes a 1972 onward NYPL bookplate for {28}the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
