The New York Public Library Appoints Michael Dardia Vice President for Finance and Assistant Treasurer

MARCH 11, 2016 – The New York Public Library has named Michael Dardia Vice President for Finance and Assistant Treasurer, responsible for the institution’s budget and financial planning and analysis. He is scheduled to start on March 28.

Dardia comes to the Library after spending nearly three decades -- the last 12 years in New York City -- bringing financial acumen to mission-driven organizations. From 2004 to 2014, Dardia worked as a deputy director in the New York City Office of Management and Budget, overseeing both expense and capital budgets for the city’s housing and economic development agencies, as well as task forces responsible for macroeconomic and tax revenue forecasts covering the city’s $70 billion budget.

From 2014 until now, Dardia worked as co-director of research at the fiscal watchdog Citizens Budget Commission, where he managed research and analysis of fiscal and management issues related to New York City and New York State.

At the Library, Dardia will work with Chief Operating Officer Iris Weinshall and others to oversee the Library’s fiscal functions, including an annual operating budget that is currently over $300 million. His responsibilities will include administering the Library’s endowment and capital construction programs, and acting as the staff liaison for the finance and audit committees of the Board of Trustees.

Prior to his time at the Office of Management and Budget, Dardia held a variety of positions analyzing and researching finances in his three-decades long career, including vice president and director of research at the non-profit SPHERE Institute and research fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California.

Dardia graduated from Stony Brook University with an M.S. in Management and Policy Analysis, and earned a Ph.D. in Policy Analysis from the RAND Graduate School of Policy Studies. He is a member of the New York City Council Task Force on Economic Development Tax Expenditures, a Senior Fellow at NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service and has guest lectured at both Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
