The New York Public Library’s New Amsterdam Branch to Receive Extensive Renovations

Library will close on May 14 to receive new HVAC system and interior renovations

April 26, 2018 – The New York Public Library’s New Amsterdam branch – located at 9 Murray Street in lower Manhattan – will close on May 14 to facilitate the installation of a new HVAC system and partial interior renovations.

The popular lower Manhattan branch opened in 1989 to serve the influx of New Yorkers living in the area. To better serve the community, the Library will be replacing the branch’s decades-old cooling system, which impacted service last summer. The renovation will also add two new accessible bathrooms for the public, new ADA compliant entry doors, and a hearing loop for the branch’s multi-purpose room. The Library will also undergo upgrades to its fire alarm and sprinkler system, and receive general cosmetic improvements.

The branch is expected to reopen in late 2019.

During construction at New Amsterdam Library, patrons can use the Battery Park City Library at 175 North End Avenue or Chatham Square Library at 33 East Broadway. All items on hold at New Amsterdam Library will be delivered to the Battery Park City Library until the renovation is completed.
