What is Foursquare?
Foursquare is a location-based social network that lets you interact with friends and places directly from your mobile devices. You can learn more about the locations you visit, unlock specials and promotions, and earn badges by checking in on Foursquare.
For more information visit foursquare.com.
What does “checking in” mean?
When visiting a NYPL neighborhood library, you can use your Foursquare mobile app to check in. By doing so, you earn points for each check-in, unlock badges including the Library’s Find the Future badge, and become eligible for special NYPL promotions. Follow NYPL on Foursquare to find out more.
Read the Foursquare FAQ for more information about check-ins
What is a tip?
Tips are short bits of information shared by other Foursquare users at locations. When you check in, Foursquare will display a tip left by a friend or other user. Make sure you follow NYPL on Foursquare to see the Library’s latest tips.
What is a mayor and how can I get “elected”?
The mayor of a venue on Foursquare is the user with the most number of days with check-ins in a 60-day period. Note that only one check-in a day counts toward mayorship. Often mayors get special privileges. At NYPL locations, mayors are entered into a drawing for tickets to a LIVE from the NYPL event and may sign up for a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Map Division.

What is a badge and how can I get one?
Badges are trophies that you can unlock on your explorations of places around the city. The badges are collected and displayed in your Foursquare Trophy Case.
You need to follow NYPL on Foursquare to be able to earn the Find the Future Centennial badge. Hint: Visit the 90 NYPL locations often and check in. The NYPL badge can be earned between March 30 and June 30, 2011 during business hours of the respective location. Note that only one check-in per day counts toward the badge. The free Foursquare Friends Membership is only available to residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.
What is a special?
Specials are promotions that can be unlocked in a variety of ways. NYPL offers specials for mayors at all locations and frequency specials at select locations. Check in to find out where they are.
