The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce is a community of businesses -- including startups, long-time neighborhood stores, mid-market firms and large companies -- that help one another succeed.

The Chamber has two 501(c)3 nonprofit arms: Our foundation allows them to provide resources, education and other programming to the business community. The Chamber's community benefit fund allows them to support the good work of charitable organizations focused on improving quality of life in Manhattan.

 

The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) is an entrepreneurship program under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Commerce, designed to increase jobs and wealth in minority communities. An upsurge in prosperity in minority communities tends to have a trickle-outward effect, essentially increasing profits for all businesses in the U.S. At ODA, our MBDA business center provides assistance to small, medium and large business enterprises. Our services include financing, consulting, procurement/contracts, registrations and certifications, and more.

Minority-owned firms seeking to penetrate new markets — domestic & global — and growing in size and scale, can access business experts at a MBDA Business Center.

At the heart of our mission is the belief that whatever their differences, people and communities share a common goal: to achieve economic stability and growth.

NMBC is a networking and referral organization for small women- and minority-owned businesses. It is dedicated to providing business assistance, educational opportunities, seminars, purchasing exchanges, mentoring, business listings, and related services to businesses throughout the tri-sate area and across the nation. Members are listed in a directory that is sent to corporate and government purchasing agents. The Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project (NELP) of the City Bar Justice Center provides low- to moderate-income micro-entrepreneurs with the legal services necessary to start their businesses on sound legal footing.

NELP’s volunteer attorneys guide clients through such matters as incorporation and tax issues, contracts and agreements, commercial lease negotiations, copyrights, trademarks, and patents. Volunteer attorneys also offer presentations and legal clinics at community-based organizations on issues of concern to micro-entrepreneurs.

The New York & New Jersey Minority Supplier Development Council (The Council) links certified minority suppliers with corporations through a database of these suppliers and events to showcase their products and services. It also offers seminars for minority-owned firms on marketing, management and other business issues and, for financing needs, refers them to the Business Consortium Fund. The initial certification rate is $400.00. The annual renewal, upon completion of certification, is $175.00. Application, payment of fee, and site visit are required prior to certification. Council-certified suppliers of the local Council are included in the National Minority Supplier Development Council Database.

The NYSBDC at York College provide no-cost consulting services to entrepreneurs and small business owners. Their professional consulting emphasizes on finding practical solutions to the everyday business problems. The NYSBDC at York College is part of statewide network of 24 regional centers located throughout New York State.
