In the United States, the Accion Opportunity Fund creates economic opportunity by connecting small business owners to affordable capital and the the business support they need to create and grow healthy enterprises and contribute to local economies. The Fund works by connecting entrepreneurs to affordable capital, educational resources, coaching, and networks. Through innovative partnerships and outreach strategies, Accion targets underserved entrepreneurs -- including entrepreneurs of color, low-income entrepreneurs, and women -- who often lack access to the financial services they need to build and grow their businesses.

 

The Business Outreach Center Network  has four business centers focused on serving entrepreneurs in the greater New York area. 

BOC Network programs and services are designed to help you and your business succeed. Our services include Business Outreach Centers, Entrepreneurship Assistance Centers, BOC Capital Corp, BXL Bronx Incubator, Industrial Business Services Project, BOC Women's Business Centers, Childcare Business Development Project, Ascend NYC, and Manhattan MBDA Business Center.

 

The SBA's Bronx Women's Business Resource Center provides individualized, comprehensive guidance to small business owners and future entrepreneurs. WBRC offers one-on-one technical assistance, business workshops, access to capital, computer training, and long-term entrepreneurial training. WBRC is also part of the Business Outreach Center Network and is one of the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program Center (EAP) in New York State. The EAP consists of 60 hours of intensive entrepreneurship training and over 15 hours of hands-on counseling. Services are offered in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. 

The Bronx overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC) and The Bronx Borough President’s Office established the Bronx Initiative for Energy and the Environment (BIEE), with the goal of demonstrating pathways to a more efficient and greener Bronx.

The Bronx Empowerment Zone Environmental Revolving Loan Fund is designed to promote the use of energy efficient and environmental technologies in the Bronx Empowerment Zone (BEZ).

The Brooklyn Business Center [BBC] is part of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (BSRC). The BBC’s services include individual coaching and counseling, access to capital, application for MWBE certification, free legal services, business plan development and implementation, workshops and seminars.

The BBC assists with locating third party resources such as pro bono legal services. The BBC is funded in part by the New York State Entrepreneurial Assistance program and is an Entrepreneurial Assistance Center.

CMP equips immigrants with the skills and network they need to be economically self-sufficient and contributing members of the greater New York City community.

One of the services CMP offers is the Entrepreneur Assistance Program (EAP).  It combines individual technical assistance with classroom training to offer a 10-week, 60-hour intensive training to aspiring entrepreneurs.  Participants finish the program with a business plan, complete with follow up support from program staff.  Individual Counseling is provided to clients in assisting them to actually go through the process of business incorporation, identifying and assisting in application of low interest loans, obtaining WMBE status, and referring them to professional resources such as legal, accounting, and taxation services.

CMP Financial Literacy Workshops and Topical Workshops such as social media marketing, MWBE certification, and government resources, etc. were offered throughout the year to support startup and business expansion.

Over the past 10 years, CMP Business Outreach Center (BOC) assisted over 930 entrepreneurs and small business owners through one-on-one counseling and coaching services. In addition, we hosted 712 workshops and seminars, helped 122 businesses increase sales by $4.2 million, created 137 jobs, and assisted businesses to secure $4.5 million loans and grants.

Established in 1995, CREDIT Inc., a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), offers three major services to small businesses in the South Bronx: 1) Loans that range from $100 to $15,000 from an in-house fund; 2) Loan packaging services for businesses that require loans greater than $15,000; and 3) Technical assistance. CREDIT Inc. helps businesses develop business plans, offers marketing assistance, prepares and analyzes cash flow projections, and assists with strategic planning. CREDIT Inc. also partners with other SoBRO programs to provide financial services and financial literacy seminars to individuals and businesses.

Empire State Development’s Small Business Division supports the development and expansion of businesses with under 100 employees – directing an array of programs and initiatives supporting small business growth and helping entrepreneurs maximize opportunities for success. New York State has been awarded $501.5 million in federal funding through the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI), a program through the American Rescue Plan Act. Managed by the U.S. Department of Treasury, SSBCI provides funds to support programs for small businesses, including socially and economically disadvantaged individuals (SEDI) -owned businesses and very small businesses (VSB), to recover from the economic effects of COVID-19 and allow them opportunity to succeed in the post-pandemic economy.

New York’s $501.5 million in SSBCI funding includes a main allocation of $377.1 million, as well as $124.4 million for socially and economically advantaged (SEDI) businesses. 

Formerly known as EWVIDCO, Evergreen manages the Greenpoint/Williamsburg and North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zones and the North Brooklyn Empire Zone. Through the NYC Industrial Business Zone (IBZ) program, Evergreen is responsible for meeting the business service needs of more than 10,000 industrial businesses in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg and North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zones and Ombudsman Zones. These businesses depend on Evergreen for free, quick and reliable assistance with tax credits, incentives, financing, real estate and relocation assistance, energy and green issues, workforce needs, and advocacy. Evergreen provides these services in concert with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community organizations.
