Theatre and Technology Fellowship
The Billy Rose Theatre Division at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts has chosen Kyueun Kim as its inaugural Theatre and Technology Fellow. Kim, a Ph.D. candidate in Theatre and Performance at The Graduate Center, CUNY plans to examine the possibilities of using VR as an experiential medium for theatre research and archiving. The fellowship, supported by a generous gift from Marshall Weinberg, will aid Kim in her research.
Kim plans to spend her time at the Library for the Performing Arts, investigating how contemporary artists use VR in their performances, and even interview artists in VR. “With the guidance of the Library for the Performing Arts and its archives,” Kim said, “I hope to examine not only how VR can expand the possibilities of performing arts, but also how theatre history and theory can expand some of the assumptions and expectations about VR.”
As a 2022 Theatre and Technology Fellow, Kim will receive a stipend of $10,000 for travel and living expenses in New York City, and $2,500 for “photo orders” of previously undigitized material in the library’s collection. At the end of the fellowship time period, Kim will present her work in a public program in the Bruno Walter Auditorium at the Library for the Performing Arts.
“I look forward to learning from the NYPL's staff and archives and sharing my research with the community,” said Kim.
