Homer's Odyssey: A (virtual) Slow Read
Location
Please join us for the fifth installment of our online book discussion! This session will focus on Books 17-20 of the Odyssey. We will take our time to savor the experience of this poem, and therefore, expect to be finished by June.
Though codified in writing by Homer in the eighth century BC, the story of The Odyssey ( and The Iliad) has been handed down orally over many generations. This accounts for some of the anachronisms in the Homeric texts, the layering of descriptions from seemingly different historical periods. Homer's epics are primary sources in the history of classical antiquity, and we will touch on that history, here and there, when necessary.
Which translation are we using?
The two librarians leading the discussion are using the Emily Wilson translation. However, you may use any translation you care to. The Fagles and Lattimore are two popular options, but any version will do for this discussion group.
Some of us have read The Odyssey( or The Iliad), for others, this may be a first attempt. Whatever your situation, we equally welcome beginners and seasoned Homer aficionados to our discussion group. We aim to create a casual and supportive space to share our thoughts, questions, and observations as we wade into the text.
(If you would rather attend and just listen, that is fine too!)
