LIVE from NYPL: Annie Proulx: Fen, Bog & Swamp

In her new book, the Library Lion and winner of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize reveals the history of wetlands, their ecological role, and what their systematic destruction means for the planet.

Brimming with the same reverence for nature as her fiction, Annie Proulx’s new book is a compact history of the world's wetlands and the vitally important yet little understood role they play in preserving the environment—by storing the carbon emissions that greatly contribute to climate change. Charting the history of human interaction with these crucial natural resources, Proulx lays bare the frightening reality of wetland destruction and what it means for the planet and our survival. 

The New York Public Library holds Proulx’s papers, and the event will begin with a short talk about them by Carolyn Vega, Curator of the Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature. And come early for a one-night-only display of her materials at the back of the room.

To join the event in-person | Please be sure to register for an In-Person Ticket. Doors will open 30 minutes before the program begins. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Annie Proulx is the author of nine books, including the novels The Shipping News and Barkskins, and the story collection Close Range. Her many honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner award. Her story “Brokeback Mountain,” which originally appeared in The New Yorker, was made into an Academy Award–winning film. Fen, Bog, and Swamp is her second work of nonfiction. She lives in New Hampshire.
