The New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic discusses her follow-up, a smoky noir set during the Mexican Dirty War of the '70s.

Book jacket for Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Maite works a boring desk job in Mexico City and spends most of her time day-dreaming about slipping off somewhere, away from her dateless nights, late car payments, and overbearing mother. In her mind, she escapes to a tropical island with a hot lover from one of her favorite comic book romances. But when her next-door neighbor Lenora goes missing one day, Maite finds herself thrown into a turmoil of passionate love affairs and a very real war between student protesters and the government-backed units aimed at squashing their leftist ideology.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia speaks with Gabino Iglesias about the novel, old noir, the music of Elvis, and more.

The program will be streamed live on this page. If you encounter any issues, please join us on NYPL's YouTube channel.
