Thinking Out Loud: Far from the Tree: Rachel Dretzin and Andrew Solomon with Anthony Marx

Event Details

A new documentary brings to life the bestselling book about families who have overcome extraordinary challenges through love, empathy, and understanding.

Far from the TreeEmmy Award–winning filmmaker Rachel Dretzin follows the stories of families coping with the challenges presented by sexual and gender orientation, physical and developmental deviations, and behavioral anomalies such as criminality. Interspersed between the subjects of the documentary, Far from the Tree author Andrew Solomon shares his own experience of coming out as a gay man to a less than accepting family. By showing commonalities across these narrative threads, the film demonstrates how to embrace diversity in our world, and encourages us to cherish loved ones for all they are, not who they might have been.

Following a screening of the film, Dretzin and Solomon will be joined in conversation by Tony Marx, President of NYPL, and take questions from the audience.
