Carys Davies and Salvatore Scibona talk about Davies’s first novel, West, which follows a man in 19th-century Pennsylvania who leaves his daughter in search of giant beasts rumored to live west of the Mississippi.
Carys Davies is the author of two collections of short stories, Some New Ambush and The Redemption of Galen Pike, which won the 2015 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. She is also the recipient of the Royal Society of Literature’s V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize, and her work has appeared in Granta, Ploughshares, The Guardian, Marie Claire, The Sunday Telegraph and The Times. She wrote West while a Fellow at the Cullman Center in 2016-17.
Salvatore Scibona is the Sue Ann and John Weinberg Director of the Cullman Center. His novel The End was a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Library's Young Lions Fiction Award. His fiction has also been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers' Award, and an O. Henry Award, and in 2010 The New Yorker named him one of its "20 Under 40" writers to watch. His new novel, Everyone, completed during his 2016-17 Fellowship at the Cullman Center, will be published in 2019.
