NY-NJ Trail Conference maps 1935 and 2016
Comparison of trail maps at Bear Mountain, NY, 1935 & 2016

Since 1920, The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference has managed and maintained a well-loved and heavily used trail system that stretches across the New York metropolitan area. The key to providing access to hikers and daytrippers alike? The high-quality  maps that the Trail Conference has long produced for parks.

Jeremy Apgar has been the cartographer for the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference for 10 years, creating maps to assist with all aspects of building, maintaining, and educating people about trails. He will discuss the history of trail mapping in the region over the past century, how maps are made today, and why Trail Conference maps are considered the gold standard for trail maps in the region—and beyond.

A selection of historical trail maps and guides from the Library’s collection will be on display.

This lecture is sponsored by the New York Map Society.

FIRST COME, FIRST SEATED
For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released 15 minutes before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A stand by line will form one hour before the program.
