Day 2: Warping Maps

This two-part, hands-on workshop will give you an overview of the NYPL Map Warper tool (available at maps.nypl.org), and how you can use it to discover historical maps. You will also be supporting the Library’s efforts to create new public research tools.

What is the Map Warper? The Map Warper is a free tool that enables you to align digital images of historical maps with today’s map, or what we like to call “warping”. Cool, huh?

Who should take this workshop? Everyone who has taken Day 1: Introduction to The Map Warper! Students, teachers, map lovers, history buffs, artists, and researchers can all use the Map Warper. All you need are basic computer and internet skills.

On Day 2: Warping Maps, you will:

  • Practice warping maps
  • Prepare maps to be the tiles of a virtual atlas
  • Download and share warped maps

How can I find out more? Attend a workshop, watch the tutorial at maps.nypl.org, or send an email to citizencartographer@gmail.com.

Don't forget to register for both sessions, Day 1: Introduction to the Map Warper on Tuesday, Sept 6, and Day 2: Warping Maps on Wednesday, Sept 7!

  • Skill prerequisites: Basic computer skills, basic internet skills
  • Audience: Adults
