LIVE from NYPL: Siddhartha Mukherjee | David Remnick

In his new book The Gene: An Intimate History, Siddhartha Mukherjee chronicles our understanding of human heredity and its influence on our personalities, fates, and choices. To launch his book, Mukherjee is joined by The New Yorker’s David Remnick for a conversation about medicine, writing, and personal narrative. 

SIDDHARTHA MUKHERJEE is a cancer physician and researcher. He is the author of The Gene,  The Laws of Medicine, and The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction. Mukherjee is an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and a staff cancer physician at Columbia University Medical Center. A Rhodes scholar, he graduated from Stanford University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School. He has published articles in Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, The New York Times, and The New Republic. He lives in New York with his wife and daughters. 

DAVID REMNICK has been editor of The New Yorker since 1998 and a staff writer since 1992. He has written many pieces for the magazine, including reporting from Russia, the Middle East, and Europe, and Profiles of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Katharine Graham, Mike Tyson, Ralph Ellison, Philip Roth, and Benjamin Netanyahu. Since Remnick became editor, The New Yorker has garnered a hundred and forty-nine nominations for National Magazine Awards and has won thirty-seven. In 2001 and again in 2005, the magazine won an unprecedented five National Magazine Awards; in 2014, the magazine won four awards. In addition, in 2000 Remnick was named Advertising Age’s Editor of the Year.
