Films at the Schomburg: Freedom Summer

Veteran Director Stanley Nelson captures the volatile months of the 1964 Freedom Summer (runtime, 113 mins) through remarkable period footage and the firsthand testimonies of volunteers who were transformed by their time in Mississippi. A talk-back will follow the screening.

Stanley Nelson, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, Emmy Award–winning MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellow, and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is the director of 12 documentary features. He is cofounder of Firelight Media, which provides technical education and professional support to emerging documentarians.

This event is part of Mississippi Goddam: Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Landmark Events in the Civil Rights Movement, a special Schomburg programming series celebrating the 50th Anniversary of some of the most memorable landmark events of the Civil Rights Movement from 1963-1965.
