Instructor: Benjamin Obler

Athletes train. Actors rehearse. Singers sing scales. Shouldn't writers being doing something to strengthen skills? Yes, they should, and like body building it can be done componential. In this class, we’ll build and strengthen proficiency in fiction craft through targeted training tasks. Students will have fun honing techniques through writing exercises, free from the pressure to produce a finished work (though the results may become the start of something). We’ll also learn from contemporary short story writers—everyone from Donald Antrim to ZZ Packer. Bring a spirit of experimentation, and walk away with strengthened techniques in setting, character depiction, dialogue, plot development, and more.

Benjamin Obler is the author of Javascotia, a novel from Penguin Books UK. His articles and stories have appeared in The Evansville Review, Qwerty, Thirty-Two Magazine, Mill City Bibliophile, and the London Guardian. He teaches fiction workshops with The Loft Literary Center.
