Come celebrate Shakespeare as NYPL hosts the primarily rounds of the ESU New York Shakespeare Competition!  Started in New York City in 1983, this free program is a local tradition that all can enjoy.  The Competition brings together New York City area high school students to perform monologues and recite sonnets from the Bard’s Canon.  These students shall have already advanced through in-school competitions and represent the best of the best from public and independent schools across the city.  Each day talented students will be chosen by a judging panel to advance to the community finals (held later in March). 

This event is part of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition.  For over 30 years, this educational program has provided high school teachers across the country with a performance-based program for the study of English Language Arts curriculum and their teaching of Shakespeare.  Through the Competition, students develop communication skills, confidence and an appreciation of timeless language and literature.  Every year the winners of local ESU Branch competitions across the country advance to a National Competition at Lincoln Center and compete for the chance to study Shakespeare in England.
