Black History Month Youth Film Series:

Glory

Running Time: 118 minutes, Suitable for: Grades 7-12

Based on the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, and the novels Lay this Laurel (Lincoln Kirstein) and One Gallant Rush (Peter Burchard), Glory tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment—the first formal unit of the US Army to be comprised entirely of African American men as they fight in the Civil War alongside their commanding officer (Colonel Robert Gould Shaw). Starring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington (who won an Academy Award for this role).  This screening is part of a week-long series of films for young audiences that capture a diversity of voices on the African-American Experience.  All films are followed by a discussion by the filmmakers, scholars, or Schomburg educators.
