Mama’s Missionary Money by Chester Himes

When Lemuel “accidentally” found the old black purse in his Mama’s dresser drawer, it was filled with quarters and dimes and nickels and even a few dollar bills. He only took a quarter the first time. He knew Mama would find out eventually. It was just a question of time and punishment.

Other February Story Time Dates - February 20

Marigolds by Eugenia W. Collier

Old Miss Lottie lived in a ramshackle shanty in rural Maryland. Times were hard in the Depression, and the only thing of beauty in her life was the bed of marigolds in her dusty yard.

Exodus by James Baldwin

Florence decided the time had come to leave her Southern small town for New York City, even if it meant leaving her aged mother and her shiftless brother Gabriel behind. It was time to write her own history instead of reliving her mother’s.
