Yoga has been developed for about 5000 years and aims to improve the physical, mental, and emotional states of our beings. Yoga can aid in improved concentration, digestion, metabolism, flexibility, muscle strength, muscle strength of muscles not normally used, posture, blood circulation, and immune system function. Yoga also reduces our vulnerability to emotional distress by balancing the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems training our bodies to have a higher capacity for stress by developing a more restorative relaxation response. With this combination over time, yoga improves the ability to experience a more profound sense of well-being.

The Class:

Gentle Yoga is designed for students who have special needs and/or limitations. This class is a variation of basic level I yoga format, moving more slowly and includes attention to the special needs of the individual.

The Teacher:

Pedro (Shambhu) Perez-Cabezas is a native of Riverdale who graduated in 2005 from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. He is certified with the Integral Yoga ® Institute and registered with the Yoga Alliance.  He also provides tutoring services for 6th grade-12th grade math and science with a combined curriculum of meditation and tutoring. He has experience teaching various populations at Integral Yoga, Riverdale Y, Sweetwater Yoga the Bronx, Whitehall, Astral Fitness and RMHA.
