John Morgan is the night wire operator at a west coast newspaper. He transcribes the news telegraphed from all over the globe throughout the long, lonely nights, primarily bad news of fires, disasters, suicides, and murders from Singapore, London, Calcutta,  New York. No one had ever heard of Xebico until the night wire reported a strange, deadly fog enveloping the entire town.
