Tower of London prison expense report

This document discovered in a box of stock certificates and other papers related to the South Sea and Mississippi Bubbles in The New York Public Library’s Manuscripts and Archives Division. In it, the Constable of the Tower of London seeks payment for expenses incurred while “safekeeping” prisoners, including government and South Sea officers implicated in the scam. Among the names listed is that of Chancellor of the Exchequer John Aislabie, who defended himself in a highly publicized trial speech.
