Now on view at the New Amsterdam Library: PICTURE/BOOK, an Exhibition of Art & Literary Selections. 10/12 – 12/16. The exhibition features original art by seventeen members of the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors paired with literary passages each artist chose to complement their artwork.

The Federation was founded in New York in 1940 for the purpose of representing and promoting innovative and trend setting artists. The Federation has continued that important mission. Today its members work in a wide array of styles, as diverse and idiosyncratic as New York’s current art scene, as is evident from Picture/Book.

The accompanying literary works are every bit as diverse: Ranging from Emily Dickenson to Thomas Wolfe; from Edward Lear to James Baldwin; and, from Todd Parr to Virginia Wolfe. The show also features unpublished literary pieces by artist and writer Jerilyn Jurinek and by Nancy Lapidus for artist Regina Perlin.

There will be an Art Talk/Q & A held on 11/16 at 5 pm. The event is being organized and moderated by Jerilyn Jurinek. In all, there will be seven artists speaking. It will feature readings of a selection of works accompanied by expository commentary by the participating artists. The talk will be followed by an informal Q & A. There is limited seating so it recommended that you register before coming. And if you plan to attend, you must arrive prior to 5 pm because this will be a closed door event.
