We hope that you don't encounter any issues with our online application.  If, however, you do have trouble, this FAQs section should help you navigate the application process.  

I am having issues with application/ account - what do I do?
NYPL's online application process is hosted by iCims, a leading provider of applicant tracking systems and HR software.  Please see their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) site to answer many of your application questions or issues.  If you continue to experience issues, please contact their Help Desk at (800) 889-4422.

What jobs/positions are available at NYPL?
NYPL has positions in a wide range of areas.  Our opportunities include full time, part time and hourly positions in a host of public facing or behind the scenes roles.  For a full listing of positions available at NYPL, please visit the Search Opportunities page to view and apply for any opportunities at the Library.

How do I apply for a job/internship?
To apply for a job and/or an internship, please visit the Search Opportunities page to view and apply for any opportunities at NYPL.  In order to be considered for any position, you need to create a candidate profile with a completed application.

I forgot my login/password and/or I am having issues with my login, what do I do?
Please visit the Search Opportunities page and click on the "Retrieve Password" link.  If you created a profile with us, using a unique email address, you will receive an email that will direct you to reset your password.

If the system does not recognize your email, or if you don't receive an email to reset your password, don't forget to try previous email accounts you may have used.  If that does not work, your profile most likely does not exist in our system.  If you are interested in submitting an application, you will need to create a profile.  For more help, please see the iCims Applicant Guide.

How do I change the email address associated with my account/profile?
To update your email address, log into your profile and click on "Update your profile" on the upper right corner of the screen.  Please do not create a whole new profile using a new email address. This creates duplicate records.  For more help, please see the iCims Applicant Guide.

How do I check the status of my application?
To check the status of your application, log into your existing candidate account and click on "View the status of jobs you've applied to" on your dashboard.  You should see all positions that you have applied to and if your application is currently under review.

How do I update/edit my resume/application or cover letter?
To update your resume/ application or cover letter, log into your profile and click on "Update your profile" in the upper right corner of the screen.  For more help, please see the iCims Applicant Guide.

How do I include a different cover letter for each job that I apply to?
Unfortunately, you can only include one cover letter with your profile. If you are applying to multiple positions, please make sure your cover letter is general and relevant to all positions you are interested in.

I don't see an opportunity that is a good match or that I am interested in.   Can I still submit an application to The New York Public Library?
Yes. On the Search Opportunities page you will see the option to submit your resume for general consideration.  In addition, if you search using keywords (ie. "librarian" or "fundraising") you will be able to save this search and receive notifications if if a matching position is posted.  To do this, run a search and click on "create agent" under the "Job Search Agent Options" section.  

How long does it take for an application to be reviewed?
While it may vary based on the role that you apply to and the volume of applications that we receive, it typically takes 3 to 6 weeks to review an application.  If a recruiter determines that you meet the qualifications for the role, they will contact you to set up an interview.  Otherwise, you will receive notification via email that you are no longer in consideration.

What opportunities do you have for students?
Students are eligible to apply for any open position that matches their experience.  In particular, the Library Page Program is designed specifically for students currently enrolled in a degree program of any level.  The Library Page positions are entry level hourly positions typically scheduled for 14-19 hours per week.  

Does the Library host internships?
NYPL does host a limited number of internships each semester.  These opportunities will be posted on our website along with work opportunities, so please visit the Search Opportunities  page, limit your search by the category "intern opportunities" and apply as directed.

Does NYPL sponsor visas for international candidates?
We encourage anyone to apply for positions posted on our website.  Potential visa sponsorship is dependent upon the job and the candidate pool for the position.

I am interested in working for The New York Public Library. Where are your locations?
The New York Public Library has locations throughout Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx, and a service center in Long Island City. Please visit the Location and Hours page on to see a full listing of all of our locations.

Can I contact the HR Department regarding my application?
Because of the volume of applications the Library receives, the HR Department is unable to answer individual inquiries. Please log into your profile to edit your candidate information, update your application/resume, and view the status of your application for a particular job.  For additional help, please visit the iCims FAQs or contact the iCims Help Desk at (800) 889-4422.
