Careers at NYPL FAQs


We hope that you don't encounter any issues with our online application.  If, however, you do have trouble, this FAQs section should help you navigate the application process.  If you are having trouble navigating the system, this vendor guide may be a useful tool.  Good Luck!

How do I contact the HR Department regarding my application?
Because of the high volume of applications the Library receives, the HR Department is unable to answer individual inquiries. Please log into your profile to edit your candidate information, update your application/resume, and view the status of your application for a particular job.  Please review the Frequently Asked Questions below for guidance on the Library's applicaiton process.  

NYPL's online application process is hosted by iCims, a leading provider of applicant tracking systems and HR software.  Please see their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) site to address technical issues or answer questions about how to navigate the application.  

What jobs/positions are available at NYPL?
NYPL has positions in a wide range of areas.  Our opportunities include full time, part time and hourly positions in both  public facing and behind the scenes roles.  For a full listing of positions available at NYPL, please visit the Search Opportunities page to view and apply for any opportunities at the Library.

How do I apply for a job?
To apply for a job, please visit the Search Opportunities page to view all opportunities at NYPL.  You will be able to apply filters to narrow your search to positions that match your skillset or location preferences.  In order to be considered for any position, you must create a candidate profile with a resume and completed application.  You must also answer any screening questions associated with the job.

I forgot my login/password and/or I am having issues with my login, what do I do?
Please visit the Search Opportunities page and click on the "Retrieve Password" link.  If you created a profile with us, using a unique email address, you will receive an email that will direct you to reset your password.

If the system does not recognize your email, or if you don't receive an email to reset your password, don't forget to try previous email accounts you may have used.  If that does not work, your profile most likely does not exist in our system.  If you are interested in submitting an application, you will need to create a profile.  For more help, please see the iCims Applicant Guide.

How do I check the status of my application?
To check the status of your application, log into your existing candidate account and click on "View the status of jobs you've applied to" on your dashboard.  You should see all positions that you have applied to and if your application is currently under review.   Our HR team does not have the capacity to field candidate calls, so any updates regarding application status will be communicated via email or through our careers portal.

How long does it take for an application to be reviewed?
This time varies per role and the volume of applications that we receive at any given time.  It may take several weeks for our team to review your application.  If a recruiter determines that you meet the qualifications for the role, they will contact you to set up an interview.  Otherwise, you will receive notification via the careers portal or email that you are no longer in consideration.  Our HR team does not have the capacity to field candidate calls.

How do I update/edit my resume/application or cover letter?
To update your resume/ application or cover letter, log into your profile and click on "Update your profile" in the upper right corner of the screen.   You are be able to enter one resume and one cover letter associated with your profile.   We do not have job-specific resumes/ cover letters.  What you are able to see on your profile is exactly what a recruiter will see and is updated in real time.  For more help, please see the iCims Applicant Guide.

How do I include a different cover letter for each job that I apply to?
Unfortunately, you can only include one cover letter with your profile. If you are applying to multiple positions, please make sure your cover letter is general and relevant to all positions you are interested in.  If you make changes to your cover letter after you apply, a recruiter will see what you see on your screen.

How do I change the email address associated with my account/profile?
To update your email address, log into your profile and click on "Update your profile" on the upper right corner of the screen.  Please do not create a whole new profile using a new email address.  This creates duplicate records.  For more help, please see the iCims Applicant Guide.

I don't see an opportunity that is a good match or that I am interested in.   Can I still submit an application to The New York Public Library?
At this time, we invite candidates to apply for specific positions.  If you do not currently see a position that meets your interests, you can set up notifications to alert you to future positions that match your interests.  To do this, run a search using keywords (ie. "librarian" or "fundraising") and click on "create agent" under the "Job Search Agent Options" section.  The notifications will be active for 6 months.

What opportunities do you have for students?
Students are eligible to apply for any open position that matches their experience.  In particular, the Library Page Program is designed specifically for students currently enrolled in a degree program of any level.  The Library Page positions are entry level hourly positions typically scheduled for 14-19 hours per week.  

Does the Library host internships?
NYPL does host a limited number of internships each semester.  These opportunities will be posted on our website along with work opportunities, so please visit the Search Opportunities  page, limit your search by the category "intern opportunities" and apply as directed.

Does NYPL sponsor visas for international candidates?
We encourage anyone to apply for positions posted on our website.  Potential visa sponsorship is dependent upon the job and the candidate pool for the position.
