E-Books for Other Devices

You will need: A library card and PIN, a computer running Mac OS X, Wi Fi or Ethernet, and Safari or another web browser.

Getting started

Install any of the following software.

Checking out e-books

  1. Browse and search for books at browse.nypl.org
  2. On the book you want, click “Check out with…”
  3. Enter your library card number and PIN.
  4. If the book you want is unavailable, place a hold to be notified when you can borrow it.
  5. Click the download link and select the format you would like. For EPUB and PDF this will download an ACSM file to your computer. When you open it, it should launch Adobe Digital Editions and open your file.

For cloudLibrary e-books, open the cloudLibrary app. Your book will be available there.

For Kindle Books, you will be taken to amazon.com to complete your checkout and must sign in to your account there to have the book “delivered” to your Kindle app.

For NOOK

Transfer files from OverDrive or use the SimplyEOverDrive, or cloudLibrary apps on select NOOK tablets.

For Windows PC

You will need: NYPL library card and PIN, a computer running Windows 7, Vista or XP, Wi Fi or Ethernet connection, and a web browser.

Getting started

Install any of the following software.

Checking out e-books

  1. Browse and search for books in the catalog
  2. On the left side under Format, select eBook
  3. On the book you want, click Borrow.
  4. Enter your library card number and PIN.
  5. If the book you want is unavailable, click Place a Hold to be notified when you can borrow it.
  6. Click the download link. This will download an ACSM file to your computer. When you open it, it should launch Adobe Digital Editions and open your file.

For cloudLibrary e-books, open the cloudLibrary app. Your book will be available there.

For Kindle Books, you will be taken to amazon.com to complete your checkout and must sign in to your account there to have the book “delivered” to your Kindle app.
