Stacks of books on a library desk

From a young age, James Baldwin was a regular user of The New York Public Library, including the 135th Street Library (now known as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture) and the flagship location at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. Alongside our two exhibitions dedicated to Baldwin's legacy, we are delighted to celebrate his life and work by giving away 4,000 Baldwin books across select branches this summer and fall. Each participating library will carry a selection of books, with themes ranging from “Page to Screen: Baldwin on Film” to “Literary Romance.” The giveaway is limited to one book per patron and will run while supplies last.

Updated 8/12/2024: The giveaway books are going fast and this list is being updated to reflect this. Please check with your branch about availability for the most up to date information. We encourage you to check out our introduction to Baldwin's work and borrow his books with your library card. See all the ways the Library is celebrating 100 years of James Baldwin this summer.
