Jewish New York Through the Lens of Morris Huberland
Morris Huberland was a prolific Polish-American photographer who immigrated to New York City in 1920 and began taking photographs in his teen years documenting street life and everyday New Yorkers. The New York Public Library has over 18,000 of his photographs in our Digital Collections. To mark Jewish American Heritage Month, we'd like to share some of Huberland's images of Jewish life and culture in New York where he often visited yeshivas, synagogues, and historically Jewish neighborhoods such as Manhattan's Lower East Side. Most of his photos are undated, but were taken between the years 1940 and 1979 when cameras were not as commonplace as they are today. They offer a snapshot of Jewish life in New York that might otherwise be lost to history.
