Adapting books into films and tv series is nothing new and it seems, more and more, that the literary world is fueling Hollywood. What is new is that the books being adapted increasingly reflect more diversity in genre and creators. Below is just a sampling of works that are in different stages of development and production that will be appearing on big and small screens...sometime! They include acclaimed titles like Octavia Butler's Kindred and Nella Larson's Passing as well as manga, a comic book, and works for children. We've also included a few at the end that just recently became available to watch.

Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the slave quarters, and each time the stay grows longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana's life will end, long before it has a chance to begin.

Butler's visionary 1979 novel is being developed into a series for FX.

book cover

Persuasion by Jane Austen

Anne Elliot is a woman of quiet charm and deep feelings. When she was nineteen she fell in love with and was engaged to a naval officer, the fearless and headstrong Captain Wentworth. But the young man had no fortune, and Anne allowed herself to be persuaded to give him up. Now, eight years later, Wentworth has returned to the neighborhood, a rich man and still unwed. Anne's never-diminished love is muffled by her pride, and he seems cold and unforgiving. What happens as the two are thrown together in the social world of Bath and as an eager new suitor appears for Anne is touchingly and wittily told in a masterpiece that is also one of the most entrancing novels in the English language.

Does the world need another adaptation of Persuasion? Apparently it needs two. Dakota Johnson is set to star in a "modern retelling" of Austen's last complete novel for Netflix which begins filming in May. Sarah Snook is set to star in an adaptation for Searchlight Pictures.

book cover

The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton

Considered by many to be her masterpiece, Edith Wharton's second full-length work is a scathing yet personal examination of the exploits and follies of the modern upper class. As she unfolds the story of Undine Spragg, from New York to Europe, Wharton affords us a detailed glimpse of what might be called the interior decor of this America and its nouveau riche fringes. Through a heroine who is as vain, spoiled, and selfish as she is irresistibly fascinating, and through a most intricate and satisfying plot that follows Undine's marriages and affairs, she conveys a vision of social behavior that is both supremely informed and supremely disenchanted.

Sofia Copolla is developing Wharton's 1913 novel into a series for Apple TV+.
