NYPL Events: What's Happening 4/2-4/16

 

Welcome to our bi-weekly update on events happening during the next two weeks at The New York Public Library. With 92 locations across New York City, there's a lot going on! 4/6: Edwidge Danticat with Paul Holdengraber: The Art of Immigration: Haitian born novelist Edwidge Danticat celebrates the immigrant experience of being an artist, explains how she uses her art to raise immigrant voices, and how the turmoil of today is changing her approach to doing so in the future in this exciting conversation with Paul Holdengraber. 7 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

4/3: Isabella Rossellini with Menno Schilthuizen: Chicken and Eggs: Actor Isabella Rossellini raises chickens; evolutionary biologist Menno Schilthuizen studies them. Together, they will explore the mysteries and wonders of our animal kingdoms.  7 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

4/4: A World Without "Whom": Emmy J. Favilla with Ammon SheaBuzzfeed  editor Emmy J. Favilla presents a guide to spelling, grammar and punctuation that reflects how readers use language on and offline. 6:30 PM, Mid-Manhattan Library at 42nd Street. 

4/5: Conversations in Black Freedom Studies: 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr: Join in on the discussion of Dr. King's legacy with Mary Francis Berry, Jeanne Theoharis, Thomas Jackson and David Stein. 6:30 PM, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

4/5: Opening Reception for Art Exhibition: Infinite Archive: NYPL: The art collective, Infinite Archive, curates an exhibition with pieces ranging from paintings, prints, photography, as well as wood, metal and ceramic sculpture in response to fiction, non-fiction, periodicals, and prints in the NYPL’s collection. The breadth of artwork reflects the broad nature of the Library’s holdings. 

4/6: First Fridays: Langston Hughes Poetry Slam/ Open Mic Edition: Celebrate and honor the life of legendary poet Langston Hughes in the annual First Friday's Open Mic Edition.  6 PM, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. 

4/7: Opus Two Piano Duo: The award-winning duo comprised of violinist William Terwilliger and pianist Andrew Cooperstock performs American music in celebration of Leonard Bernstein's centennial. 2:30 PM,  The Library for the Performing Arts. 

4/9: Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution: Todd S. Purdum discusses about the creators of the classic broadway musicals The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, Carousel, and South Pacific in a revelatory evening of memories and insights. 6 PM, The Library for the Performing Arts. 

4/9: Reimaging Community: Finding Sanctuary in Public Spaces: Watch and discuss the impact of the public, public-facing spaces and their role in the development of community, commerce and the fight for the soul of a neighborhood with a panelist of artists. 6:30 PM, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. 

4/16: Cinephilia Showcase: Emerging Filmmakers from the Middle East and Africa: American-Lebanese film director Darine Hotait curates a program of short films by Cinephilia-connected "Filmmakers to Watch."  6 PM, The Library for the Performing Arts. 

4/16: Thinking Out Loud: Preserving Net Neutrality: Library President Tony Marx convenes a panel of experts to help shed light on the repeal of net neutality and the impact it will have on individual citizens and their digital rights in the future. 6:30 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. 

4/16: Black Swans: Reissue Party: A panel of writers and artists celebrate the reissue of Eve Babitz's 1993 short story collection Black Swans. Actress Zosia Marnet moderates the conversation with fellow Babitz enthusiasts Stephanie Danler, Karah Priess, and Jia Tolentino. 6:30 PM, Mid- Manhattan Library at 42nd Street. 

4/17: Gods and Mortals: Madeline Miller with Emily Wilson: Author Madeline Miller returns to The New York Public Library to talk about her latest novel of the mythological sorceress, Circe, inspired by The Odyssey. Miller discusses the novel with classicist and translator Emily Wilson, the first woman to translate The Odyssey  into English. 6:30 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

4/17: Radical Feminism and LGBTQ History: Martin Duberman Fellow, Marcia M. Gallo, discusses the influence of feminism and how it made an impact on LGBTQ activism in the late 1960s and early 1970s. 6:30 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. 

4/18: Berenice Abbott: A Life in Photography: Julia Van Haaften, founding curator of the Library's photography collection, returns to talk with artist Anna Craycroft about Berenice Abbott: A Life in Photography, Van Haaften's comprenhensive biography of the iconic 20th century American photographer. 6:30 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. 

4/18: Fear City: Kim Phillips-Fein and Alexander Burns: Past Cullman Center Fellow Kim Phillips-Fein and New York Times reporter Alexander Burns discuss her latest book, Fear City: New York's Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of  of Austerity Politics, on the occasion of its paperback release.   7PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. 

4/20: Library After Hours: Revolutionary Journalism: The Library hosts its monthly Library After Hours event, investigating journalism in the 1960s as this month's theme. Guests can have a drink, explore the exhibition "You Say You Want a Revolution," watch 16mm films of headlines in the 1960s, craft with the collections, and more. 7 PM, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

4/4: Turn Job Interviews into Job Offers: Learn how to conquer job interviews with strategies like storytelling, and how to handle tricky questions about weaknesses and salary. 6 PM, Science, Industry and Business Library. 

4/6: Easy Visibility for your Business or Brand: Master techniques on how to land major national press, pitch a viral article, and gain worldwide coverage for your business or brand. 3 PM, Science, Industry and Business Library. 

4/12: Understanding Financial Statements for Your Small Business: CPA James Buro discusses the proper recording and accounting of the numbers associated with the activities that impact a small business. 3 PM, Science, Industry, Business Library.
