Woman and Girls

An extraordinary group of women who are on the front lines of the fight for bettering the lives for young black women and girls across the country gathered at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture this International Women's Day to highlight the roles, needs, and contributions of black women and girls in the context of the Black Lives Matter Movement moment. Featuring:

  • Monique Morris, social justice scholar, co-founder of the National Black Women’s Justice Institute, and the author of Black Stats: African Americans by the Numbers in the 21st Century, Too Beautiful for Words, and, most recently, Pushout
  • Monifa Bandele, VP and Chief Partnership & Diversity Officer of Mom’s Rising; former National Field Director for the Brennan Center for Justice
  • Vivian Anderson, member of Black Lives Matter NYC working in Columbia, SC, promoting #everyblackgirl
  • Elle Hearns, founding member of the Black Lives Matter network and a strategic partner since its inception
  • Tynesha McHarris (moderator), Fellow for the Novo Foundation’s Advancing Adolescent Girls’ Rights initiative.
