Building Works: Pre-Apprenticeship Training for Careers in Construction

Building Works is a pre-apprenticeship training that prepares interested candidates for careers in the building trades.  In partnership with the NYC District Council of Carpenters Labor Technical College, the 3 month training is tuition-free and provides both classroom instruction and hands-on experience preparing you for success in a union apprenticeship.  Participants in Building Works gain experience  from a wide range of courses, including job readiness, industry related math, health and safety, as well as hands-on instruction in shop classes under the supervision of journey-level union carpenters.

Certifications received during the training may include:

A first year apprenticeship in the Carpenters Union earns $19.95/hour while receiving on the job training and technical classroom instruction.   For more than a decade, Building Works has successfully trained hundreds of candidates most of whom have joined—and are completing—unionized apprenticeships...and are building careers in a skilled trade. Together we are helping to build the future of organized labor.

Question about the 3 month Training

I recently referred a friend to this program who went to the orientation, submitted his application with supporting documentation, took the test and passed and most recently went on the one on one interview. He is waiting for a notification about the group interview. He was originally informed that the entire duration of this program would be paid, but was recently informed at the one on one interview, that the classroom training would not be. Further, placement into the program is also not guaranteed. Can you please advise on how to go about this since he is currently employed and would be making a huge sacrifice if he is accepted into the non-paid pre-apprenticeship program and if he is in fact placed into a job?

BuildingWorks

It seems your friend received some incorrect information during his application process. Since 1995, BuildingWorks has always been a free, unpaid training. The program is ideal for candidates who are unemployed or under-employed, and can therefore commit to attend the three months of training. BuildingWorks is a NYS Department of Labor approved pre-apprenticeship training with Direct Entry Status allowing program graduates to access apprenticeship opportunities with the NYC District Council of Carpenters. Successful BuildingWorks graduates can be recommended to begin a 4-year union apprenticeship in carpentry. Since January 2014, 152 BuildingWorks graduates started unionized apprenticeships, with an average 82% retention rate in that apprenticeship. The application process for BuildingWorks is highly competitive and involves a comprehensive application, pre-enrollment testing and personal interview.
